Lynx R-1 – Ultimate AR/VR Goggles – Have Just Been Funded on Kickstarter!

French startup Lynx launched a Kickstarter campaign in October for the Lynx R-1 – a standalone MR headset that is capable of both VR and passthrough AR. Lynx's proposal was met with considerable enthusiasm, meeting their initial goal in less than 15 hours. Over the course of the month-long campaign, they managed to cross the $800,000 threshold. What is next? And could this MR headset (combination of AR and MR goggles) be the next great option for premium VR porn movies? After all, producers like VR Bangers have already been messing up with AR porn… so why not?

The Lynx R-1 Kickstarter campaign is now complete, having raised $835,000 from 1,216 donors. In the final hours, the campaign managed to surpass the first stretch goal of $700,000. If you missed the campaign, the company is now offering direct pre-orders for both the Standard Edition for $600 and the Enterprise Edition for $1,100. It is also selling several accessories – including compatible 6DOF controllers, face interfaces, and a travel case.

The Lynx R-1 has the same Qualcomm XR2 chipset as the Oculus Quest 2 and HTC Vive Focus 3, and like them is based on a heavily modified version of Android. You connect it to a VR-enabled computer, and the developers say that you will be able to use SteamVR content when they launch officially next year.

What sets it apart from other devices, however, is that it is built from the ground up to play VR games and play VR porn movies, as well as to use augmented reality passthrough apps – and, possibly, AR porn scenes in the future. Another new feature could be a novel optical system called the "quadruple catadioptric prism," which is said to reduce the size of the Lynx R-1 beyond what the current Fresnel-style lenses have achieved. All versions will come with a meter-long USB-C cable, USB-C charger, face interface for a more immersive experience, and a fabric head strap for added comfort.

Because the device relies on hand tracking, motion controllers are not an "out-of-the-box" control method. CEO Stan Larroque said the 6DOF controllers are based on Finch Technologies' "Shift" controller hardware – something we have already seen in practice with the HTC Vive Focus. You can order them from the manufacturer's website for $99 per pair.
