VR Porn Technology Basics – Degrees of Freedom
What is an Axial Motion Detection System?
The axial motion detection system is more commonly found under the name Degrees of freedom (DoF). Usually, next to this name we can also find the number 3 or 6 – depending on the type of technology used. To what do these two figures correspond, though? Well, these digits are otherwise equivalent to the number of axes on which a properly prepared object can move – namely the VR headset in this case. The very name of the discussed technology in free translation means "levels of freedom" – so, as you could have probably already guessed, the greater the number next to the DoF name, the more freedom you can feel in virtual reality. Even though the basic set of features is good enough for watching VR porn videos, we keep coming up with more and more interactive solutions for our virtual reality porn experiences, and not only you should more about this technology, but you should also be well-aware how to differentiate it – to later be able to use its full potential and, with all these degrees of freedom, enjoy our chosen VR sex content exactly the way you want.
What is the Difference Between 3-DoF and 6-DoF?
Once you know what DoF is in theory, we can now go on to describe these mysterious numbers. As we have mentioned above, you can distinguish between two types of solutions: 3-DoF and 6-DoF. The first one is only responsible for the rotation of the object on its own x, y, and z axes – meaning that such a device can rotate around its own axis at will. If you add an additional 3 axes you will get 6-DoF. Then, in addition to rotating the object itself, you will be able to also move it in space, for example: up and down, forward and backward, and left and right – which could be crucial for our VR porn games and interactive virtual reality porn experiences.
3-DoF
As we mentioned above, with the help of the device supporting 3-DoF you will be able to track rotational but not positional movement. This means that such VR goggles can transmit information such as whether you have looked left or right, up and down, or forward and back. The disadvantage of the "simplified" version of DoF is that it is not possible to receive information about your position in three-dimensional space. Example headsets supporting 3-DoF are Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR (both require a suitable phone) or Oculus Go.
6-DoF
In addition to 3-DoF functionalities, 6-DoF devices also read your position in a three-dimensional space. This means that such VR headsets "know" whether you have moved left, right, front and back, crouched, or stood up. It is thanks to 6-DoF that you can navigate the virtual world as you wish. Examples of 6-DoF supporting headsets are Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, or HTC Vive.
How Do the Devices Read Your Position in a 3D Space?
To explain this, we will take one of such devices – in this very case it is going to be the Playstation VR – and describe the technology (the LED lights) that it is using for this purpose. The PlayStation's camera, when it notices the appropriate light coming out of the headset, "finds" its position and sends the information about the location of the headset on a 3D grid to the system. This way the VR goggles know perfectly well where you are and can process this information for VR porn. A more modern example is the Oculus Quest, which has built-in cameras in VR goggles and continuously checks the environment around you and processes your position. We keep on recommending these VR goggles for more requiring VR porn movies, but even though we do that because of their capabilities of running our VR sex scenes in ultra-high definition resolutions, we consider these 6-DoF features really interesting as well.
Which Headset to Choose – 3-DoF or 6-DoF?
It pretty much all depends on your preferences – and on the purpose that you have bought the chosen VR headset. If you just want to browse through VR porn movies, sex photos, or some landscapes in virtual reality – and your gaming is limited to simple smartphone apps – 3-DoF will be enough for you. However, if you want to move around in virtual space and be able to impact items placed in the virtual world – for example in interactive VR porn games and experiences – then a headset with 6-DoF support should be your choice.
