WeTac Takes VR and AR Experiences to a Whole New Level

WeTac is Like a Second Skin

VR devices allow for a high degree of immersion in the virtual world, making the user feel an active part of the whole. First of all, they guarantee an excellent visual and auditory experience. When it comes to tactile experience, things are no longer so rosy – today's devices are generally bulky and tangled with wires. The solution to this is to be found in an advanced wireless touch interface system called WeTac, developed by researchers at the City University of Hong Kong. The soft, ultra-thin material it's made of collects personalized touch experience data to provide vivid experiences in VR and AR.

"Touch feedback has enormous potential, along with visual and audio information, in virtual reality (VR), so we've been working all along to make the touch interface thinner, softer, more compact, and wireless, so that it can be used comfortably on the palm of the hand, like a second skin," says the spokesperson of WeTac.

The electronic "skin" is lightweight and is made of a rubbery hydrogel that sticks to the hand and fingers and is connected to a small battery (charged wirelessly) and a Bluetooth system. The hydrogel is dotted with thirty-two electrodes spread over the palm, thumb, and fingers, through which an electric current flow to create tactile sensations. The team claims that by stimulating specific combinations of these electrodes with different powers, the WeTac system can simulate a range of experiences. Demonstrations have indicated, among other things, catching a tennis ball, as well as the sensation of a virtual mouse walking across the user's hand.

"Since individuals have different sensitivities, the same feedback make can be felt differently in the hands of different users. Therefore, we need to adjust the feedback parameters accordingly to provide a universal tool for all users," the spokesperson adds.

The WeTac System Will Have Quite a Few Applications

The team says the system can be paired with virtual reality or augmented reality. It has the potential to find applications in gaming, sports, social activities, and remote control of robots.

"We believe it is a powerful tool for providing virtual touch and provides inspiration for the development of the metaverse, human-machine interface (HMI), and other fields," the spokesperson concludes.
